Starting September 18th, you can play classic NES games on your Nintendo Switch – But only if you’re subscribed to Nintendo Online (Nintendo’s new online subscription service.)
Unlike Virtual Console on the Wii and Wii U – you will be able to play select NES games bundled into your subscription, without having to purchase games individually through the store. The only downside to this new subscription service is, if you decide to cancel your subscription – you will no longer be able to play these games.
At launch, there will be 20 classic NES games that you can play – The launch games are: Balloon Fight, Baseball, Donkey Kong, Double Dragon, Dr. Mario, Excitebike, Ghosts’n Goblins, Gradius, Ice Climber, Ice Hockey, The Legend of Zelda, Mario Bros, Pro Wrestling, River City Ransom, Soccer, Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros. 3, Tecmo Bowl, Tennis and Yoshi.
These will be followed by three additional titles each month – with the original NES Metroid coming in November, and the likes of Wario’s Woods and Ninja Gaiden coming the month after. There’s a full list at Nintendo’s NES web page.
As part of Nintendo Online – you are able to connect with friends online and share your screen for co-op and competitive play. In single-player games, you can take turns at the controls.
When playing online, you can display a hand-shaped cursor on your friend’s screen. Use it to give hints or point out strategic locations. You can even clap to congratulate them.
Wireless NES Joycons!
In addition to being able to play classic NES games on the Nintendo Switch – You can also buy a pack of two wireless NES controllers for your Switch. This can only be purchased by Nintendo Online members though – so you will need a subscription.
